The city of Ghom lies in a dry riverbed, about 150 km south of Tehran.
It is the second holiest city in the country and also the seat of a theological educational center. The sister of the eighth Imam is buried in one of the beautiful mausoleums.
Typical of Ghom carpets is the delicate work with flowers made of wool or silk. Persian knots are often tied very densely. The patterns come from different parts of Iran. Pure silk rugs are also common.
The most common are patterns with gardens, medallions and figures with motifs of animals and plants. Ghom carpets are nowadays produced in other places as well. Names like Ghome, Gom, Qum, Kum and Qom also appear.
